Social media — the place where youth spends time more than their academics, where the elderly people are doing duty with unwanted forwards, the weapon to the politicians to spread hate and violence, and the list of negative things goes on and on.

Social media plays a key role in connecting people and I do agree that it helps people in getting opportunities, and a platform to showcase talent.

But what’s really happening on social media?
Fan wars, spreading hatred, and passing on lewd comments!

Also, people can become overnight stars just by a WINK!! It all happens only through social media. Even you heard about the RCB Girl, right?

Dhoni plays a match — there are Dhoni hater pages in social media which cry on his batting ability and there are Fan pages which bark on his stumping skills. But how does it affect DHONI?

It’s high time to see where we are heading to and analyze our progress as a human being. I was a social media addict, too.

My addiction!

Soon after joining IIT Hyderabad, I had welcomed Freedom in my life with a smartphone. I started updating my profile on Facebook and browsing newsfeed. I did that for timepass and relaxation from academics.

Letter from RCB girl: Deepika Ghose on becoming an overnight celebrity.

After doing that for a month, I was addicted to Facebook. I was so addicted that in my free time from Facebook, I used to focus on Academics and have food. Social media owned me.

“God gave things to use and people to love. But we are using people and loving things”

I was switching Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp but couldn't get out of social media. Smartphone got attached to my hands forever. It's in my IV semester did I realize the time I spend on social media. It was about 4 hours a day. Scary, isn't it!!

How I got rehabilitated from this addiction?

I was overthinking about the negative effects that it had on me and I wrote down what can I do to be progressive. I just wondered HOW THE HELL did I give importance to the people who don’t even know who I am, who don’t care about the things I do?

Then I got to know the importance of me— only me. I realized that I should be knowing about me more than anything.

Here’s the list of things we can do to overcome this addiction:

  1. Reading books.
The best way to spend time is by reading books. I started with novels and self-mastery books like “The Magic of Thinking Big” and “The Monk who sold his Ferrari.”
  2. Going for a walk daily.
It’s a very good activity of going for a walk with your friends, and sometimes alone. A pleasant and refreshing time.
  3. Avoid using the phone.
Whenever you’re with your family, try to keep your mobile phone away from you. Nothing is important than people and their relations!
  4. Switching OFF mobile data
Before going to sleep every day, switch-off the mobile data, and use the internet in the morning once you’re done with the morning activities. You can use this quality time in the morning to do progressive things.

If you feel that you’re a social media addict, try to do at least one thing from the above list and let me know how you feel after doing that :)
